John Fry's 1940 LaSalle

John Fry's 40 LaSalle

The Challenge

John brought us an already nicely restored-to-original LaSalle with the simple mandate, "make it better", which in this case meant retaining all its class and classic styling, updated with subtle body mods, modern drive line and suspension. His goal was to have us create a "stock looking" LaSalle that was also a highly functioning and elegant street rod.

What We Did

As little as possible and more than you'll ever know. We did exactly what the LaSalle would let us do, which is to say, exactly what it seemed to want. To address drivability, we added a GM 430 bhp LS3 and 4L60e transmission, updated the suspension with modern running gear in the form of a DSE front sub frame and a custom 4 link out back. We also tightened the bumpers into the body, performed a host of Art Deco machining throughout and added a set of wheels from Intro that kept the Art Deco theme rolling.

What We Achieved

Like we said earlier, we did what the LaSalle let us do - not too little, not too much, yet somehow, just right. This car has a class, a culture and a cool all its own and we're happy that we were able to synthesize it. It has personality and looks like it belongs exactly wherever it is; it could be a gangster's car, but it would be reserved for the highest ranking member and used only for the most exclusive occasions. It could be a "runner's" car, but instead of moonshine, it'd probably carry vintage wine or champagne. It's just that kind of ride.
